2021-2022 Whatcom Assistance Program
The 2021/2022 Whatcom Assistance Program request for community outreach applications listed areas of focus as: 1) Project supports, implements, or advances one or more local programs or actions from a WRIA 1 plan or WRIA 1 Watershed Management Board work plan (i.e., 2017 Whatcom LIO Ecosystem Recovery Plan, 2018-2023 WRIA 1 Watershed Management Board Implementation Strategies) and 2) Project helps lead to resolution of a larger water quality, water quantity, stream flow, or habitat issues in Whatcom County.
Five applications were funded through the Whatcom Assistance Program. Final reports for organizations funded are listed below.
The Evergreen Land Trust Association project to inform community members about water resource management and promote greater awareness about the role forests can play in increasing summer streamflow. Final Report Presentation
The Lummi Nation Natural Resources outreach project focus was on South Fork Nooksack Edfro Phase 3 and developing a community outreach plan to engage stakeholders in developing a design concept that restores salmon habitat while integrating multiple benefits. Final Report
The Nooksack Tribe Natural Resources outreach project supported the South Fork Nooksack Fish Camp Integrated Flood and Fish Project by developing and implementing an outreach approach to engage affected landowners and stakeholders in a pilot project. Final Report Project Sheet
Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association used funding to support the Salmon Discovery Program, which is a collection of community-based salmon education initiatives designed to create a more knowledgeable and caring community by building a direct connection between people, local salmon populations, and habitat. A key activity of the Program are Salmon Sighting events that offer chances to see and learn about spawning salmon in their natural habitat. Final Report
WSU Whatcom County Extension delivered sustainable landscaping short courses using the small grant funds. The courses include reducing polluted runoff from residential landscapes by giving participants the skills needed to adopt landscaping practices that protect water quality.
